About
Our Story
The Stand U.P. Comedy Festival was born from a simple idea: stand-up comedy is an art, and Marquette is a city that loves the arts, so why not bring an annual comedy festival to the Upper Peninsula? Co-organizers Vincent Schultz, Bryan Sromalski, and Rick Rhoades launched the inaugural festival in November 2022 at the Ore Dock Brewing Company, featuring 12 comedians across six shows over three nights. The “U.P.” in the name is no accident; it’s a nod to the region the festival proudly calls home.
The Festival
What started as a three-night event has grown steadily year over year. Now in its fifth year, the Stand U.P. Comedy Festival spans four nights with seven shows and 15 comedians. Programming includes traditional stand-up sets, open mic nights, and the fan-favorite “Thick Skin” show, a rapid-fire competition where comedians battle for a cash prize and first-timers are welcome to throw their name in the hat. Each year’s lineup features a mix of nationally touring comics and local and regional talent.
Meet the Organizers
The Stand U.P. Comedy Festival was founded and is run by three U.P. locals who share a passion for stand-up comedy and a love for Marquette: Vincent Schultz, Bryan Sromalski, and Rick Rhoades. What started as a vision to bring world-class comedy to the Upper Peninsula has grown into one of the region’s most anticipated annual events, and these three are the reason it keeps getting better.
Why Marquette?
Marquette is a city that shows up for live events, and the Stand U.P. Comedy Festival was built for it. Nestled on the south shore of Lake Superior, Marquette hosts festivals year-round and has a strong, loyal arts community. The Ore Dock Brewing Company has been the festival’s home since day one, providing an intimate, energetic venue where a room full of people can laugh together.
